Inside the Story-Day 2 continued

After going to Destiny, we thought our hearts couldn't be more full, we then headed out to see the area where some of the children used to live before finding their new home. The area was located on the outskirts of Kampla called Cutway (the slums). The first picture was a women from Alex's church (I wish I could remember her name!) She got down on her knees to thank us for the food we delivered to her. She has two children at the orphanage, she lost her husband to AIDS. The picture shows the woman surrounded by everything she owns. That is her home, her possessions, trying to make a living for herself. As we walked to her home we walked through trash and the smell was horrible. We couldn't believe that these people and children lived in this condition. We saw a woman nearby trying to clean off her dishes outside her house with the muddy water in front of her house. The story of the boy in the middle picture is a 8 year old boy who has to take car of his one year old brother while his mother has to go into town to find work. Do you know of any 8 year old boy who babysits their little brother all day while instead of attending school? Me either. He doesn't need to worry about changing diapers though because none of the babies wear diapers. I tried to capture some of what the neighborhood looked like in the last picture but it really couldn't be pictured in a photograph. This whole experience left the whole group very solemn and quiet on the ride home, taking in all that we saw..wondering why some children have to experience this kind of poverty. God only knows. He has used people already like the man Alex I mentioned. Alex grew up in these slums and is now helping his people, pastoring a church, leading an orphanage....God works in his ways that are beyond our understanding!
